Losing to Virginia - I feel dirty
posted by Nobrainer
Yesterday I attended the Clemson-Virginia matchup on the "rowdy" and "modern" UVA campus in a run-down arena waiting for the wrecking ball amongst a crowd that would probably have been more apathetic, were it not so lethargic.
Before I go on, I'll freely admit was Clemson was fairly and squarely defeated. The shooting percentage was low, and the rebounding battle was lost 39-21. That's your game right there. On the upside, Clemson played with far more energy and intensity -- frequently forcing mistakes and causing turnovers.
Maybe the fans were smart enough to realize that their team was beating only an average team on a bad day. Nonetheless, it was a league game and no one up here seems to care for Clemson or any college that has anything to do with cows or farming (the agrarian Thomas Jefferson should be attached to a generator for as much as he must be spinning in his grave).
Maybe there just weren't enough students there because classes are still more than a week away. The arena was pretty full though, with over 8,000 recorded at the gate. And the crowd did manage to get riled up a few times before the very end of the game. For most of the game though, whenever a call by the officials went against the Hoos and was remotely questionable, the crowd went into hysterical booing. They did manage a bit of a cheer when it was announced that Maryland was losing to Miami. We can agree that Maryland is worth disliking. Throughout the entire game, I can't even recall a single instance of the crowd managing so much as a "DEFENSE! - - DEFENSE!"
Has the team been so bad at Virginia for so long that the best offense is preferentially bad officiating?
After the game, I spoke with a student I know. "The refs sucked and we couldn't hit a free throw," or some such nonsense. Someone was obviously watching the wrong game. UVA had only 3 fouls against them for the majority of the 2nd half until very late when a few cheap ones were added on. What's more, Virginia went 18-22 on free throws, while Clemson went 6-7.
What makes all this worse, is that Virginia band plays nothing that you won't hear everywhere else. "Go team go." Maybe they through in some KC and the Sunshine band as well. After the game, however, they do play their version of Auld Lang Syne.
So, I'll simply end by saying, "congratulations, Virginia."
